How does Gramble Thyssen, middle-aged and complacent bureaucrat, transform into an brilliant FBI agent? Extract from the book Chapter 1 “Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board.” — Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) “Birdie in the hand for life's rich demand The insurgency began and you missed it I looked for it and I found it Miles Standish proud, congratulate me A philanderer's tie, a murderer's shoe Let's begin again begin the begin Let's begin again” “Begin the Begin” R.E.M. (1986) i. Gramble Gramble Thyssen was looking at the clock wondering when it would strike 5 PM so that he could leave. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) was, as always, devoid of any “customers” and the silence preoccupied him the hum of the air-conditioning, the occasional cough several aisles away, the shuffling of papers, or creak of a chair. He was alone today in his cubicle – again – as Edith was out pregnant and George started showing premature signs of Alzheimer’s and no one had been assigned yet to the other corner and was rummaging in the tomb of his memories. Funny how these partitions create a fake sense of isolation and look so desolate with their laminate surfaces, the carbon copy telephones and old monitors and power strips. The Wi-Fi was relatively unstable (despite being spitting distance between the Lincoln Memorial and the White House in central Washington, DC) and the network cables were all missing that little plastic tab designed to hold the cable in the laptop port. If all four occupants of the cubicle pushed back on their chairs, they would collide without even stretching out their legs. And should two of them need to make a phone call at the same time, well, it was hard to hear oneself think sometimes. The Standing Rock conflict in North Dakota was still a few years away, so things were very quiet. Too quiet. He opened the file before him once again. It had a few receipts stapled inside the cover smudged with a dirty thumbprint and slightly crumbled from being in his pocket. They were from his investigative trip down to Florida. What a change from DC. He decided to stretch his legs and walked over to the window from which he could see a corner of the Washington Monument. In his reflection in the window, he was a bit pale and haggard with salt and peppered brownish hair with high cheekbones and penetrating blue eyes. At 43, and a few inches shy of six foot, he had already started developing a bit of a beer gut. His thoughts drifted to that trip down to Miami. First off, after kissing the kids and his wife goodbye (“Daddy will be back in just a day or two”) that airplane ride on an aging 737 with staff that looked as if they were recruited in a nursing home – probably easier to keep these ageing employees on minimum wage and increase the airline’s profit margins rather than paying younger people that would ask for higher salaries. It did tug at his heart when their tottering hands were handing scalding hot coffee across the two seats to him at the window (out of pity or out of fear of spilt coffee, he couldn’t say.) Then, the mess of Miami International Airport (MIA) which, still, after decades, was under constant construction. This time around his luggage was not lost (no, he was an old-fashioned traveler that didn’t mind checking bags even if it meant losing them occasionally). He was in no hurry; he was not really expected at the casino – a sort of surprise inspection or rather inconspicuous observation, nonetheless a regular monthly one. He had suspicions of collusion of the corrupt members of the tribes running the casino with organized crime and thus being too obvious and cocksure with a formal visit would, of course, cause the mafia-connected individuals to flee like shadows when a light is turned on in a dark basement. He had a sense of rage against injustice; for a long time, he was able to feel he was making a difference at the BIA, bu

I like to support new authors. I therefore make a point to seek them out, thus this book. This is the author’s first book. For the first attempt, it is an interesting book. Our protagonist is a midlevel agent at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He travels a great deal inspecting the Indian casinos. Primarily, he is looking for money laundering and other signs of mob inroads into the casino. The book is well written. The characters are interesting and well developed. The plot is light and at times I felt the author lost track of the plot. The story got bogged down in flashback memoires that slowed down the story. The story idea is good and has potential.
I read this as an e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad. The book is 276 pages long. I bought this book from Amazon.

The Gramble Chronicles I Sophie Playlist Michael FINOCCHIARO 9782955983805 Books Reviews
Interesting plot woven from the intersections in the lives of the characters. Throw in passages from great literature and a wide mix of music lyrics that enhance the story and you keep my attention. I need to run out and read some of the referenced books and listen to the book's playlist.
Even though this author put this book out there free through Valentine's Day I purchased a copy of it before he did so. I think it's really important to try to support new authors trying to break into a difficult world. It takes a lot of time and courage to put yourself out there and then sit back and patiently see how people are going to judge your work.
Let me start out by saying that this is not a typical choice of reading material for me. Contemporary romance, angsty, smut, I'm all in. This is none of those. I'm not really sure how I'd classify this story.
The book is about Gramble Thyssen, who is a seemingly distracted man working at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Samuel Feinstein, a MIT partially educated nerd who isn't socially graceful. You later find out what they have in common and what brings their lives together.
This isn't a huge plot-driven story. And I struggled through quite a bit of it. There are a lot of classical literary and musical references. There is a lot of description - oftentimes way too much. 80% of this book went over my head and made me feel really dumb. The author tells you things, moreso than letting the characters and plot develop, as if he wants to immerse you in every single one of the things he holds dear to himself as far as literature, music, and places he's either visited or knows intimately. I can see his passion for the things he loves.
This book is also in need of some editing. There are a lot of missed words, wrong words and mixed tenses. The farther along in the book I got, the more frequent the errors were. The book goes from first person to third person often. The author also refers to characters of Zoe and Adele as Sophie a few times. I think that is a mistake, but maybe it was intentional??? (The author has since had this book further edited).
The story itself was a 2.5 star read for me. I didn't hate it, but it left me confused and frustrated by all the things that went over my head, and that's totally my issue. All in all, I applaud this author for putting himself out there. He felt he had something to say to the world and that is courageous no matter what. That makes it deserve 3 stars!
I really enjoyed this book, though I must (in full disclosure) admit to a GoodReads acquaintance with the author.
This is the first book by this author and a first installment in a series. I don’t often go for reading books in a non-finished series, for fear of getting too involved and then suddenly left out in the cold. But that's not a problem here as the story wraps itself up nicely.
There are a lot of names and places to get around to, but the confusion is relieved by humourful scenes, like page 27 “Death by PowerPoint , a common technique in corporations where they numb the employees’ brains by showing dozens of nearly identical slides that say nearly nothing.” Guilty as charged!
The writing style is flowing, full of references to art, history, books and places.
All in all a read well worth your time. Smartly written and funny. The pace picks up towards the end and there is a satisfying closure.
Somewhat similar to "A Visit from the Goon Squad" in creativity and narrative structure, Monsieur Fino's debut novel did crack a smile from me on several occasions.
Some of his female characters make jokes that are hilarious, but I don't think I would ever hear an actual woman say them. They are too intimately masculine.
For a first effort it's pretty good!
The book sports a multi-narrational structure, not unlike that of Faulkner’s ‘As I Lay Dying’. From the get-go, I realized I might get lost in the multitude of characters and their connections. So I kept quick notes, discarded once it all started to make sense. And eventually make sense it all did, at which point I could relax and enjoy the flow.
The fast-paced spontaneous prose clearly indicates author’s intimate familiarity with all the world-wide places where the action veers. For example, my long stay in Japan confirms the described minute details of Tokyo’s railway system. The fine collection of e.g. hotel tricks unmistakably betray extensive empirical knowledge. In all – the reader can fully trust the environmental background.
I admit I was slightly taken aback by the behavior of some of the characters, their actions and reactions. But – that’s what books are for to show us that our way is not the only way. People are different, thank God.
If the books we read are supposed to give us pleasure, ‘Sophie’s Playlist’ definitely does the trick. I enjoyed it tremendously.
My honorable mention for Seymour’s poem for Yolanda and all the musical and poetic excerpts at the head of each chapter.
On the side note – a careful proofreading is in order. More typos than in an average edition, of the kind that a WP spellchecker won’t find. E.g. “had” where “hand” or “head” is expected.
All in all – I highly recommend Michael’s first publication and am already waiting for more!
